The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) signed a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. The signing took place at the inaugural Access to Justice Coordination Forum in Abuja.
Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Secretary, NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, SAN emphasised the urgency of safeguarding the rights of marginalised groups. “We need an aggressive, multi-sectoral approach to protect the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS,” Ojukwu said. “The NHRC is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure access to justice for all Nigerians.”
Director-General, NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, praised Ojukwu’s leadership. “This forum marks a crucial step toward ensuring equitable access to justice, particularly for those affected by HIV/AIDS,” Ilori said. “Together, we can eliminate stigma and discrimination while protecting patient rights.”
Oluwafisayo Aransiola Fakayode, representing UNAIDS, noted that many people living with HIV/AIDS face barriers to justice, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of legal support. “This partnership is vital for dismantling these barriers,” she said. “Access to justice is not just a concept; it’s a fundamental human right.”
