UNIZIK Expels Student for Assaulting Lecturer over TikTok Video

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has expelled a female student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for assaulting a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

The decision, made public in a memo dated February 13, 2025, follows an investigation into the incident, which the university described as a severe breach of its disciplinary rules.

According to the university’s acting registrar, Victor Modebelu, the assault occurred when Precious was recording a TikTok video on campus. Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a senior lecturer in the department, approached Precious and requested that she delete the video. When she refused, the situation escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Precious physically assaulting the lecturer.

The university’s Student Disciplinary Committee conducted a thorough review of the incident and concluded that Precious’ actions violated Regulation 4 of the Student Disciplinary Regulations (SDR).

In the memo seen by our correspondent on Friday, Modebelu confirmed that the Acting Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the committee’s recommendation for expulsion.

“The assault on Dr. Okoye constitutes gross misconduct,” the memo stated. “As a result, you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion is effective immediately.”

Precious has been instructed to vacate the university premises and return all university property in her possession without delay.
