The Lagos State Government has sealed public toilets in Katangua Market for discharging effluents into public drains and exposing people to communicable diseases.
An investigation by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSMWO) revealed that the operators of the public toilets were using pumping machines to pump untreated wastewater and sewage into public drains, thereby polluting the environment.
“The public toilets located at Katangua Market were sealed up for the illegal discharge of sewage and untreated wastewater into the environment,” the Lagos State Government disclosed in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
The LSMWO enforcement and compliance officers observed that the operators of the public toilets were engaging in environmental pollution, which led to the sealing of the toilets.
The General Manager of LSMWO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring sustainable wastewater management practices in Lagos. Afolabi noted that the agency will not tolerate activities contributing to environmental pollution and degradation in the state.
Afolabi urged operators of public toilets in Lagos to practice safe and sustainable wastewater management practices and avoid practices that would endanger the health of residents by exposing them to diseases.
The Lagos State Government’s decision to seal the public toilets is part of its efforts to curb environmental pollution and ensure public health safety in the state.
