As the world marks World Radio Day, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on radio stations across the country to take a proactive role in raising awareness about climate change and its consequences.
In a personally signed statement on Thursday, Idris highlighted the vital role of radio in educating Nigerians about environmental challenges. He urged broadcasters to incorporate climate-related discussions into their programming, emphasizing that radio remains a powerful tool for information dissemination. “It must be utilized to equip our communities with the knowledge and resources necessary to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects,” he stated.
The Minister urged radio stations to collaborate with specialists such as environmentalists, policymakers, and scientists to deliver precise and practical information to the public. “Involving field experts will help guarantee that Nigerians gain trustworthy knowledge about climate change and its impact on their everyday lives,” he stated.
Emphasizing the importance of personal efforts in the fight against climate change, Idris encouraged Nigerians to adopt sustainable habits. He noted that “taking small actions like minimizing plastic waste, saving energy, and promoting sustainable farming can have a meaningful impact over time.”
As Nigeria participates in the worldwide celebration of radio’s influence, Idris emphasized the global aspect of climate change, noting that “its impacts cross borders, making international collaboration crucial to tackle this crisis.”
The Minister commended UNESCO for promoting World Radio Day
