LAUTECH Clinical Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike over Unpaid Salaries

Clinical lecturers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso have launched an indefinite strike, demanding the payment of their salaries under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The move follows the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to university authorities, which the lecturers say was ignored.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the  Chairman of the LAUTECH Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Ruth Ilori and Secretary Abraham Akinbola expressed frustration over the institution’s failure to meet their demands. “The action became necessary after the authorities failed to meet our demands following the ultimatum,” the statement reads.

The lecturers emphasised that LAUTECH is the only university in the South-West region that has failed to implement the salary structure, a situation they say is contributing to a brain drain and serious setbacks in medical education. “Only universities in the South-West have failed to comply with the payment structure, leading to brain drain and setbacks in medical education,” the statement continued.

The lecturers are calling for urgent intervention from relevant stakeholders to address the issue. They warn that continued neglect could destabilize medical education further. “If our demands are not met soon, the future of medical education in Nigeria is at risk,” they warned, urging authorities to act promptly.
