A recent outbreak of Lassa fever in Ondo State has resulted in the loss of 12 lives out of 112 confirmed cases. According to, the Statistician General of the state, Olusola Ajayi, there have been 353 suspected cases reported.
Ajayi described the situation as alarming and urged workers of the state waste management authority to take immediate action to ensure cleanliness in the state.
“We are together in that business. We have to act fast now because of this data that I’m going to give you,” Ajayi said.
Ajayi presented the stark reality of the situation, stating, “In Ondo State today, there are 353 cases of Lassa fever. 112 have been confirmed. 12 bodies have died. So if we want to act, the time is now.”
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, also reported that the state had recorded close to 400 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 100 confirmed cases. Ikuomola noted that there had been some deaths, but did not provide a specific number.
The outbreak highlights the need for urgent action to prevent further spread of the disease. Ondo State is one of the areas most affected by Lassa fever in Nigeria, accounting for a significant proportion of confirmed cases.
