Nigeria has been plunged into darkness once again as the national grid experienced a collapse on Wednesday, marking the second time this year.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal, the collapse occurred around 11:30 am on Wednesday. The cause of the grid disturbance has not been disclosed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the grid disturbance, stating that it occurred at 11:34 am on Wednesday.

“We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today (Wednesday), causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” AEDC said in a statement.

The company assured that gradual restoration of power supply had commenced and that they were working closely with stakeholders to fully restore electricity.

This grid disturbance comes after a similar incident on January 11, 2025, and follows a pattern of instability, with the grid suffering about 12 consecutive collapses in 2024.

The frequent grid collapses have raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power supply and the need for urgent reforms to address the issue.
