The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing leadership crisis within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and ensure strict compliance with public service rules.
In a statement released by CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani) on Monday, CISLAC urges the National Assembly to review the Police Act to prevent further conflicts and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure strict compliance with public service rules.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must intervene to uphold adherence to existing laws and prevent the politicization of Nigeria’s security institutions.” The statement read
Rafsanjani emphasized that the Police Service Commission (PSC) has the constitutional authority to oversee police appointments, promotions, and discipline. He criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for directing senior officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years of service to remain in office, violating Public Service Rule 020908.
The organization also called for a review of the 2020 Police Act amendment, which grants the IGP a fixed four-year tenure, arguing that it contradicts existing public service regulations and has led to arbitrary extensions of office tenures. CISLAC warned that such actions undermine police accountability and public trust.
CISLAC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability, calling on civil society, the media, and the public to oppose any actions that weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
