The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reassured Nigerians that the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway will be completed within 14 months as originally promised.
Speaking during an inspection tour on Saturday, Umahi emphasised the significance of the project, which began in February, and underscored the importance of timely completion.
“This road will be tolled, and so will major roads within the six geopolitical zones,” Umahi stated. “However, we will not toll any road that is not 100% completed. Our agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress ensures that only fully completed roads will be tolled.”
He further highlighted the ongoing issue of road maintenance, stressing that the public and private sectors must collaborate to ensure roads are well-maintained. “We cannot maintain 35,000 kilometers of roads on our own,” he said. “Private sector involvement is key, especially for roads under heavy use.”
Umahi also provided insights into the project’s progression, noting that Zone 1 of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway is being handled by Infiouest International Limited. He confirmed that earthworks will be completed by February’s end, with concrete pavement construction set to begin in March.
“The Federal Executive Council has already approved the construction of these two sections, and work is already in progress,” Umahi said. “Additional features such as solar streetlights, CCTV cameras, and relief stations will be incorporated along the 375-kilometer stretch, all in preparation for tolling.”
