Tragic: Police Officer Found Dead at Home

In an incident that has left the community reeling, Assistant Superintendent of Police Shafi’u Bawa was found dead in his home in Kontagora, Niger State, on Saturday afternoon.

The officer, who reportedly took his own life, was discovered hanging from the ceiling by his father, Usman Bawa.

The police were promptly notified, and officers arrived to transport the body to the General Hospital for confirmation of death.

A police statement sighted by our correspondent on Sunday confirmed the tragic event, stating, “Today, Saturday, 08/02/25, at approximately 14:10 hours, one Mr Usman Bawa, male, of Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported that his son, AP/No 337979, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling,” the statement also noted that the body was released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Niger State Police Command nor the family has issued an official statement regarding the cause of his death. Attempts to reach the state’s police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, were unsuccessful.
