The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has launched a new initiative to monitor and manage traffic flows, deploying four Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites in collaboration with Huawei Technologies.
According to Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, “The checkpoint sites are designed to detect over speeding. These checkpoint sites are strategically located to detect and deter over speeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents”.
The new installations will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
The ITS sites are located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h. Additionally, e-police sites for traffic violations have been installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.
These sites will detect a range of traffic violations, including running red lights and non-compliance with lane discipline. Osiyemi emphasized that the fine for violating the red light is N20,000, while the fine for violating the speed limit is N50,000.
Osiyemi appealed to motorists for compliance, stating that enforcement will commence immediately. Motorists who violate traffic laws will receive SMS notifications detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines to be paid.
He emphasized that the system is designed to encourage responsible driving behaviour, reduce accidents, and create an orderly transportation environment. “The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment”.
