The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commissioned the FCT National Health Fellows Selection Committee, marking a significant advancement in enhancing Nigeria’s healthcare system at the community level.
This initiative is part of the National Health Fellows Programme established by the Federal Government under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative/Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp). Its goal is to cultivate a new cohort of healthcare leaders to fill significant gaps within the system.
Mandate Secretary, of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, on Wednesday, described the programme as a pivotal investment in healthcare human resources. “This initiative is about strengthening the health system by recruiting talented individuals from all 774 local government areas,” she stated during the committee’s inauguration.
According to a statement by Special Adviser, on Media, Bola Ajao, to Dr. Fasawe, the programme will prepare fellows to oversee activities in Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities, provide feedback to the government, and tackle operational challenges. “It is part of the Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equity Programme and will position youths and early-career professionals as the vanguards of Nigeria’s health sector,” the statement read.
The programme is also a cornerstone of the Federal Government’s plan to upgrade existing PHC facilities and establish new ones. Baba Gana Adam, Permanent Secretary of HSES and Vice Chairman of the selection committee, lauded the Federal Government for prioritizing Universal Health Coverage. “This administration is taking bold steps to address our health challenges,” Adam said.
Dr. Kumshida Yakubu Balami, the WHO Coordinator for the FCT, emphasized the alignment of the program with WHO’s global guidelines. She noted that the newly established seven-member committee will be responsible for identifying and recommending qualified candidates to the SWAp Secretariat.
“This milestone underscores our commitment to fostering a new cadre of leaders who will enhance healthcare service delivery nationwide,” Dr. Balami remarked.
With training in leadership, public health, financial management, and problem-solving, the fellows are anticipated to take the lead in tackling Nigeria’s urgent healthcare issues. The FCTA, led by FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, has reiterated its commitment to establishing an effective and fair healthcare system for all Abuja residents.
