Nigerian Army Cracks Down on Oil Thieves

The Nigerian Army has announced a significant blow to oil thieves in the Niger Delta region.

According to the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lt Col Jonah Danjuma, troops have destroyed 12 illegal refining sites, arrested 16 suspects, and recovered approximately 70,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.

The operation, conducted on Sunday, jointly with other security agencies, took place across Rivers and three other states from January 27 to February 2, 2025.

Danjuma stated, “Troops of the 6th Division, Nigerian Army, while consolidating on the operational gains made, have destroyed 12 illegal refining sites, arrested 16 suspected oil thieves, demobilised six boats, intercepted nine vandalised pipes, and confiscated over 70,000 litres of stolen products.”

The Army’s efforts have yielded significant results, including the interception of two fully loaded suction trucks and the confiscation of over 10,000 litres of stolen products stored in several tanks.

Lt Col Danjuma urged the public to support the military’s efforts to combat oil theft and economic sabotage.
