Explosion in Niger State Kills 3, Triggers Urgent Safety Call

The Federation of Mining Host Communities (FMHC) is demanding immediate action following a deadly explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, Niger State.

The blast, which occurred on January 26, 2025, resulted from the improper storage of a Nakiya explosive in a rented apartment, killing at least three people and injuring dozens more. Over 40 structures, including parked vehicles, were also destroyed.

In a statement jointly signed by the Co-Chairs of FMHC, Habibu Abubakar Wushishi and Dr. Temitope Olaifa on Friday, expressed their deep sorrow over the tragedy. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the Sabon Pegi community,” the statement stated. “This incident underscores the urgent need for better regulation in the mining sector, especially regarding the handling of explosive materials.”

The FMHC is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. “We urge the Ministry of Solid Minerals and the Niger State Police Command to conduct a transparent probe,” the statement added. “Those responsible, whether through negligence or oversight, must be held accountable.”

FMHC also demands immediate enforcement of stricter safety protocols. “The storage, transportation, and handling of explosives must be regulated more tightly,” they added. “Access to these materials should only be granted to qualified individuals or entities with proof of safety training.”
