Telecom Tariff Hike: NLC Plans Nationwide Protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the recent 50% telecommunications tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), disclosing its planning a nationwide protest.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting of its National Administrative Council (NAC) on Wednesday, President, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero condemned the decision as “insensitive” and “unjustifiable.”

“The increase is a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are already struggling under the weight of economic hardship,” Ajaero stated.

He states that the hike comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with rising petrol prices, escalating food costs, and increased electricity tariffs, all while earning a minimum wage of just ₦70,000.

In response, the NLC has announced plans for a nationwide mass rally on February 4, 2025, to protest the tariff increase. “This rally will serve as a warning to the government about the dangers of imposing such unfair policies on a struggling population,” Ajaero added.

The NLC has also called for an immediate suspension of the tariff hike and urged the Federal Government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to reassess the decision.

Should the demands not be met, the NLC has warned of further actions, including potential boycotts of telecommunication services and additional mass protests.

The NLC reiterated its commitment to fighting policies that harm the welfare of Nigerian workers and citizens, vowing to continue its struggle against economic policies that exacerbate poverty and inequality.
