The Lagos State government, through its Infrastructure, Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), will commence the enumeration of all communications masts and towers in the state, effective February 1, 2025.
This exercise, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), aims to update LASIMRA’s database with accurate information on all communications infrastructure in the state.
According to Oyekanmi Elegushi, General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of LASIMRA on Wednesday, “We urge all stakeholders… to cooperate fully with our team of enumerators during the service. Your support is crucial in achieving a safer and more efficient telecommunications landscape in Lagos.”
The primary objective of the exercise is to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents by identifying and addressing potential structural or environmental concerns associated with masts and towers.
ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, emphasized the importance of the enumeration, stating that it will help identify masts and towers belonging to telecom operators and other players in the state, as well as assess their strength and health.
As of 2023, Nigeria had 39,356 towers, with Lagos having the largest number of towers deployed at 5,851.
The exercise is expected to span three months or more and will provide valuable data to inform future planning and development of telecommunications infrastructure in Lagos State.
