ECOWAS Unveils Transitional Measures after Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger’s Exit

The ECOWAS Commission confirms that the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc has officially taken effect as of today, January 29, 2025.

In response to the exit, the Commission has outlined transitional measures to ensure continued cooperation and minimise disruption for citizens and businesses.

In a statement released Wednesday, ECOWAS stated that national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo issued by these countries will still be recognised, pending further updates. “We urge all relevant authorities to respect the rights of citizens holding such documents until further notice,” the statement reads.

It further directed member states to maintain the free movement of goods and services under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), and uphold the rights of citizens from these nations to travel, reside, and establish themselves within the region.

The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity, noting that ECOWAS officials from the three countries will continue to receive support in the course of their duties. “These measures will remain in effect until a decision on future engagement is made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,” the statement added.

In the interim, the Commission has set up structures to facilitate discussions with the affected countries, aiming to manage the transition smoothly.
