Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), has agreed to withdraw the defamation and cyberbullying cases against activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Africa Health Report (AHR) gathered that the decision comes after a midnight meeting with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent Yoruba monarchs, who intervened in the matter.
According to a source privy to the meeting, the monarchs appealed to Babalola to drop the charges stemming from allegations in Farotimi’s book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” which accused the legal luminary of corruption.
Babalola had initially petitioned the police commissioner in Ekiti State, leading to Farotimi’s arrest and arraignment before two courts in Ekiti. Farotimi faced a 16-count charge of criminal defamation and cyberbullying.
However, after the monarchs’ intervention, Babalola agreed to withdraw the suits, stating, “I will tell my lawyers to withdraw the case.” He emphasized that he had no personal gain in pursuing the case and that his happiness lies in giving and contributing to society.
The Ooni of Ife, speaking on behalf of the monarchs, assured Babalola that his reputation remained intact. “Your name is more than silver and gold, and no one can tarnish it,” Ogunwusi said, lauding Babalola’s contributions to Nigeria and the Yoruba race.
The withdrawal of the case highlights the significant influence of traditional leaders in resolving disputes in Nigeria, bridging the gap between modern legal structures and cultural heritage.
