14.4% Nigerians Suffer Drug Abuse, Says NAFDAC, Agency Launches Youth Initiative in Lagos Schools

In a bid to tackle the rising menace of drug abuse among teenagers, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has inaugurated the “Catch Them Young” programme at Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Senior High School, Maryland, Lagos.

Highlighting the concerning fact that 14.4% of Nigerians suffer from drug abuse, Mrs. Yedunmi Adenuga, the Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, stressed the critical necessity for united efforts in a statement on Wednesday. “Raising awareness is the first step in combating drug abuse,” she asserted. “This program aims to inform young Nigerians about the severe impacts of substance abuse, which can lead to academic struggles, mental health issues, and physical damage.”

The initiative also aims to revive the NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) in secondary schools. Through this platform, students will be empowered to act as change agents, promoting positive values and resisting peer pressure. “We want our students to be ambassadors of a drug-free society, capable of demanding accountability and upholding societal virtues,” Mrs. Adenuga added.

NAFDAC called on teachers, parents, and communities to foster a safe environment for the younger generation. “A united effort from all stakeholders is key to protecting our future leaders from the dangers of drugs and counterfeit products,” she noted.

The programme highlights NAFDAC’s broader mission of nurturing a morally upright and empowered generation ready to champion societal progress.
