The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi has announced a significant reduction in kidney dialysis costs, slashing prices by 70% to ease the financial burden on patients.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the hospital’s Head of Public Relations, Usman Koli, revealed that the cost of a dialysis session has been reduced from ₦40,000 to ₦12,000. The move, described as a bold step, aims to address the challenges faced by patients dealing with kidney-related ailments.
According to Koli, the initiative is part of the hospital’s broader commitment to providing affordable and high-quality healthcare. He said, “The Chief Medical Director, Professor Yusuf Bara, expressed optimism about the program’s impact. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has ensured the availability of consumables in large quantities and provided a new dialysis machine to support the hospital’s efforts.”
He added that the program demonstrates the government’s dedication to making quality healthcare accessible to all Nigerians, particularly during these economically challenging times. So far, over 45 patients have benefitted from the subsidised services.
Magaji Galadima, a kidney patient at the hospital, praised the initiative, describing it as life changing. “This program has brought hope to many of us who could not afford treatment before. It is truly life-changing,” he said.
Koli assured the public of the hospital’s continued collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to sustain and expand similar programs for the benefit of all citizens.
The development has been widely lauded as a significant step toward enhancing public trust in the healthcare system and improving the quality of life for patients battling kidney diseases.
