The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development warns Nigerians about a confirmed Anthrax outbreak in Zamfara State, urging increased vigilance and swift action to prevent the disease from spreading.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry,
Ben Bem Goong, confirmed the outbreak on a farm in the state. “This development calls for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with the disease,” the statement reads.
Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is a zoonotic disease that affects both animals and humans. The disease, which can impact livestock like cattle, sheep, and goats, can lead to severe symptoms such as fever, vomiting, sore throat, and even bleeding from major openings in the body.
The Ministry urges livestock farmers to implement preventive measures, including risk assessments and vaccination of animals in high-risk areas. “Prompt detection and response are critical to containing its spread,” the Ministry states.
It also calls on neighbouring states to Zamfara to take immediate action to prevent further outbreaks. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans,” it adds.
As the outbreak continues to raise concerns, the Federal Ministry is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective response to the crisis.
