In the wake of the tragic tanker explosion that claimed over 73 lives at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State on January 18, 2025, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has issued a directive to enforce stricter traffic compliance measures nationwide.
The explosion, caused by a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) that lost control, left many injured and destroyed several shops.
Speaking through Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Sunday, the IGP expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Niger State, describing the incident as a “heart-wrenching tragedy that must not be repeated.” He also stressed that such catastrophic events call for urgent action to prevent their recurrence on Nigeria’s roads.
“This incident highlights the critical need for strict adherence to road safety protocols,” IGP Egbetokun said, underscoring the importance of zero tolerance for negligence and the flagrant disregard of traffic regulations and called for a concerted effort across the country to reinforce safety measures and avoid further tragedies.
The IGP has directed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the capacity of their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) and collaborate closely with traffic management agencies. “Enforcement of traffic rules is not negotiable. All vehicle owners and drivers must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with the law,” he stated.
He also called on transport operators to prioritize safety, stating, “We cannot afford to lose more lives due to avoidable incidents.”
