Deputy Chief Whip of HoR, Adewunmi Onanuga, Passes

Adewunmi Onanuga, the deputy chief whip of the House of Representatives, has died after a brief illness.

Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House, announced her passing in a statement on Wednesday night, saying “It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon.

Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga”. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, was a principal officer of the House.

Onanuga was first elected into the House in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023 for a second term. She was also the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development.

The politician, affectionately known as ‘Ijaya’ in her Ogun community, passed away in London, UK, where she was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

Rotimi said Onanuga’s death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian political landscape. She was described as a dedicated public servant and a strong advocate for women’s rights and social development.
