The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has commenced a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus with flu-like symptoms.
According to Olufemi Ayoola, Director of Health and Social Care at NOA in a statement on Monday, the campaign aims to provide Nigerians with necessary information on the virus and how to prevent it.
“We want Nigerians to know that while there is no known cure for HMPV, preventive measures and adherence to NCDC protocols can significantly reduce the risk of infection,” Ayoola said.
HMPV, first reported in 2001 in the Netherlands, causes symptoms similar to the common cold and influenza, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and fatigue.
Ayoola noted that in children, the virus may lead to more serious conditions like bronchiolitis or pneumonia, while in adults, it can worsen chronic conditions such as asthma.
The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing and by touching contaminated surfaces.
The statement said the NOA campaign is not a panic measure, as the virus is not yet in Nigeria, but an effort to prevent it. Ayoola assured that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has implemented proactive measures to ensure public safety.
He urged the public not to panic and to continue their daily activities while adhering to basic hygiene practices, such as wearing nose masks in crowded places, maintaining good hygiene by washing hands regularly, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
The NOA has reaffirmed its commitment to dispelling misinformation about HMPV and ensuring that citizens remain calm and informed. The agency said it would continue to work with the NCDC and other health partners to raise awareness and provide accurate information across Nigeria.
“As part of this campaign, the NOA urges Nigerians to rely on verified information from trusted sources and avoid spreading unverified rumors that could cause panic,” Ayoola said.
