The Taraba State Special Taskforce on Environmental Protection has intercepted a trailer concealing 241 bags of iron monoxide, a valuable mineral resource, during a recent operation.
In a statement signed by the taskforce’s Media and Communication Officer, Ibrahim Zuppai, on Sunday, it was revealed that the cargo, concealed under layers of waste wood and rubber dust, was being transported in a truck with the registration number GZW 470 XA KANO. The truck was traveling from Gashaka Local Government Area to an undisclosed destination when it was intercepted.
The interception is part of the taskforce’s ongoing efforts to address illegal environmental activities and curb economic losses caused by unauthorized mineral exploitation. “Currently, the trailer and its contents are in the custody of the Taraba State Special Mobile Court on Environmental Protection, which is investigating the matter,” the statement read.
Rtd. Gen. Jeremiah Faransa, Chairman of the taskforce, expressed concern about the adverse impact of these illegal activities on the state’s revenue. “Environmental violations such as this one undermine both the environment and our economic resources,” he stated.
