Lagos State House of Assembly has made history with the swearing-in of Mojisola Meranda as its first female Speaker.
Meranda’s appointment follows the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, during a plenary session on Monday.
Representing the Apapa 1 constituency, Meranda took her oath of office, vowing to serve with integrity and dedication. “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Meranda stated.
Meranda’s swearing-in comes after weeks of tension in the assembly, culminating in Obasa’s impeachment. As the new Speaker, she faces the task of restoring stability and leading the assembly through its legislative responsibilities.
