INEC Seeks N126b for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged the Nigerian government to allocate N126 billion for its 2025 budget, emphasising the need for sufficient funding to prepare for the 2027 general elections.

In a presentation to the National Assembly on Friday, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stressed that the N40 billion proposed in the 2025 budget would fall short of covering the Commission’s operational needs.

He cited the increase in the minimum wage and the rising costs of electoral processes, stating, “The N40 billion only covered salaries and basic social contributions in 2024, leaving many activities underfunded.”

Prof. Yakubu outlined several key priorities for the Commission, including preparations for the Anambra governorship election and the 2026 Area Council elections. “We must start preparations for the 2027 general elections this year, but the budget does not reflect this,” he added.

The INEC Chairman also pointed out the Commission’s substantial operational challenges, including the management of 11 planned by-elections and the replacement of essential materials such as BVAS machines. “We have lost 440 BVAS machines since the 2023 elections,” Yakubu said, noting that N205 million was received in insurance compensation.

Senator Ireti Kingibe responded, emphasising that securing adequate funding is vital for INEC’s independence and the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy. “INEC must receive the necessary funds to function properly,” she said.

Meanwhile, Adeboye Paul warned that continued budget shortfalls could jeopardize the nation’s electoral process. “We must avoid a situation where local governments are forced to step in,” he cautioned.
