First National Grid Collapse in 2025 Provokes Concerns over Blackout

Nigeria’s national power grid faced its first significant failure of 2025, leaving the entire country in darkness merely ten days into the new year.

This latest incident adds to a worrying trend, being the 13th grid failure in 13 months.

Power generation reportedly plummeted from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2 pm to a mere 390.20 MW by 3 pm.

The blackout was confirmed by The Energy Podcast, which posted: “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.”

Efforts to restore power are already underway. According to a follow-up post, “Restoration has begun… Currently generating 302 MW as of 02:40 pm.”

The frequent grid failures have drawn criticism from Nigerians, who expressed frustration over the country’s persistent energy challenges. Energy analysts emphasize the need for urgent reforms to stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable power supply.
