The Federal Government has announced plans to activate surveillance measures for inbound passengers from China, following a surge in cases of a respiratory virus in the country.

The virus, identified as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has led to overcrowded hospitals, emergency measures, and public concerns in China.

According to reports, the virus has caused a noticeable increase in cases, especially among children under 14 years old in northern China.

The Chinese government has implemented measures to curb the spread of the virus, including constant monitoring of cases, adoption of masks, social distancing, and disinfection of public spaces.

Neighbouring countries, such as Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, are also closely monitoring the situation. The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that it is closely monitoring the situation and is in close contact with national authorities in China.

Dr. John Oladejo, Director of Special Duties at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), stated on Sunday, that the Federal Government would implement preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.

“The FG will activate surveillance measures, like quarantine, for passengers coming in from China,” he said.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also provided guidance on the virus, noting that it can cause upper and lower respiratory diseases in people of all ages.

Symptoms of HMPV infection include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath, which can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia.

The virus is most likely spread through secretions from coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, and touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them.

The WHO has recommended that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, including getting vaccinated against influenza, COVID-19, and other respiratory pathogens, keeping distance from people who are ill, and practicing regular handwashing.

The organization has also advised against the application of any travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available on this event.
