The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced the arrest of over 50 suspects involved in the vandalism and theft of manhole covers in Abuja.
The arrests, coming barely hours after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has ordered action against the perpetrators, occurred during a targeted operation at various hotspots, including Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.
Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu revealed that the operation led to the recovery of 25 manhole covers, three vehicles, and numerous other items, including vandalized solar street lights and construction materials. “Our operatives conducted a targeted operation, leading to the arrest of 50 suspects and the recovery of significant stolen items,” Disu stated during a parade of the suspects on Monday in Abuja.
The investigation uncovered that the suspects were part of a larger network selling stolen manhole covers to scrap dealers. “This criminal activity endangers the lives of the general public by creating hazards on roads and walkways,” Disu said, highlighting the risks posed by such vandalism.
The extensive list of recovered items included two locally made pistols, several solar panels, and various construction tools, underscoring the Organised nature of these syndicates. “We operate a zero-tolerance policy toward acts of vandalism and theft that undermine public infrastructure and safety,” Disu affirmed, reiterating the commitment of the FCT Police to protect critical infrastructure.
