The Nigerian police have reported that it’s operatives attached to the Imo State Command have freed four hostages held by kidnappers following a gun battle in Umuokanne, Ohaji Local Government Area.
Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, stating that the police quickly traced the kidnappers’ hideout and engaged them in a gunfight. “The operatives neutralised two of the kidnappers during the operation.”
Adejobi said the operation led to recovery of AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, and 21 rounds of live ammunition.
“This operation highlights the police force’s unwavering commitment to combatting violent crime across the region. Adejobi added, “We are resolute in our mission to rid society of criminal elements and ensure the safety of all residents.”
In a separate incident, police in Ebonyi State arrested 17 suspects linked to the brutal killing of Uromchi Okorocha in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo LGA.
The suspects had accused Okorocha of witchcraft and took matters into their own hands.
The police arrived too late to prevent the mob from killing and burning Okorocha.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun condemned the act of jungle justice. “We urge citizens to report crimes to the authorities rather than resorting to violence,” Egbetokun stated.
