The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded an outstanding achievement in revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations, with a total of N102.5 billion raised for the national coffers.
This represents a remarkable 94% increase over the previous year, underscoring the command’s pivotal role in enhancing Nigeria’s economic stability and national security.
Under the leadership of Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana, the command has demonstrated impressive strides in optimizing revenue collection.
Through a blend of innovative policies, strategic enforcement actions, and modern technology, the command has not only increased revenue but also fortified the nation’s borders against illicit activities.
The success is attributed to effective stakeholder engagement, including partnerships with local communities, businesses, and international allies.
“This performance is the result of the collaborative efforts between the Customs Service, our security partners, and the businesses and citizens who have supported our initiatives,” said Comptroller Chana. “We are committed to improving compliance and ensuring a secure and thriving economy.”
In addition to its remarkable revenue achievements, the command has made significant strides in combating smuggling. Customs officials have seized large quantities of contraband, including 136 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 534 cartons of foreign non-dairy creamer, and 552 bales of second-hand clothing.
The command also intercepted dangerous substances, such as 191 blocks of compressed blue cannabis* and 74,870 tablets of Tramadol, which were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
Among the command’s notable seizures was the interception of 4,410 kg of pangolin scales, a significant blow to wildlife trafficking, in a joint operation with the Wildlife Justice Commission.
Additionally, 1,290 packs of fake pharmaceuticals were seized and handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), showcasing the command’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
The command’s ability to collaborate effectively with sister security agencies and other stakeholders has enhanced its operational efficiency.
The support of terminal operators, licensed agents, and market associations has fostered smoother trade facilitation, ensuring compliance with customs regulations while mitigating security risks.
Reflecting on the success, Comptroller Chana expressed deep appreciation for the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, and his management team for their continued guidance and resources.
He also acknowledged the contributions of security agencies, stakeholders, and the public for their unwavering support in achieving these outstanding results.
The Kano/Jigawa Area Command remains dedicated to its core mandate: driving revenue generation, facilitating legitimate trade, and maintaining national security.
Moving forward, the command aims to continue its efforts to build a safer, more prosperous future for Nigeria.
