The National Population Commission (NPC) has issued birth certificates to over 10 million children and announced plans to establish 4,000 additional registration centers across Nigeria.
This development was shared in a statement signed by Director of the Public Affairs Department at the NPC, Talibat Oloruntoba on Wednesday.
NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra stated the commission’s commitment to ensuring every child born in Nigeria is registered and issued a birth certificate. “No matter where a child is born, they will be registered,” Kwarra said at a ceremony in Abuja, where he was represented by Federal Commissioner from Katsina State, Bala Banya.
The statement also highlighted the importance of digitising the registration system, alongside partnerships with the Primary Health Care Agency to ensure all births, even in remote areas, are registered.
Kwarra urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the commission’s free registration services.
Telson Ojogun, NPC Director-General, discussed the commission’s plan to expand registration accessibility with over 4,000 new centers nationwide.
“We are committed to making registration more accessible for all Nigerians,” Ojogun said, also noting that modern technology is being used to create unique, irreplaceable identities for every registered child.
During the event, the First Lady, represented by the Vice President’s wife, Nana Shettima, presented a certificate to the first baby of the year.
Ojogun also called on Nigerians to register deaths, ensuring a more accurate population register.
