Nasarawa State Governor Engr. Abdullahi Sule has suspended the Chairman and members of the State Teachers Service Commission (TSC) following an illegal recruitment scandal.
The suspension stems from the unauthorised hiring of over 1,000 teachers, exceeding the governor’s initial approval of 1,000 recruits.
Earlier this year, Governor Sule had approved the recruitment of 1,000 teachers to address staffing shortages in schools across the state. However, public outrage erupted when the new teachers claimed they had not received their salaries, despite the governor’s directive to pay all entitlements.
In response to the public outcry, Governor Sule convened an urgent meeting at the Government House in Lafia on Monday, bringing together TSC officials, the Commissioner for Education, and other key stakeholders. “We gathered to understand the reason behind the non-payment of salaries,” said the governor at the meeting.
During the session, the TSC officials admitted that they had hired over 2,000 teachers, far exceeding the approved number.
Governor Sule expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “This illegal recruitment undermines the integrity of the process.”
As a result, the governor suspended the TSC leadership and ordered the formation of a committee to thoroughly investigate the matter. “A comprehensive report will be submitted for further action,” said Sule, signalling his commitment to resolving the issue swiftly.
