The University of Abuja’s (UniAbuja) search for a new Vice-Chancellor (VC) took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as members of the university’s external Governing Council boycotted a meeting called by Chairman, Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita, (rtd).
Kaita, who is rumored to have a preferred candidate, had scheduled the meeting to appoint a substantive VC by 3:00pm.
Sources close to the university revealed to Africa Health Report, AHR, that the external members were unaware of the Chairman’s agenda and did not receive the necessary documentation ahead of the meeting.
One anonymous source stated, “The law is clear about the selection process. The Chairman is not following due process.” The law requires specific members to be present for the interview process to be valid, including two Council members not from the Senate, two Senate representatives, and the Chairman.”
The external Council members who chose to boycott the meeting included Prof. Raphael Akinfeleye, Mrs. Chisom Dorcas Obih, and Ahaji Sabo Bappayo Ahmed.
Their decision came amid growing concerns over the appointment process.
A group of 67 professors had previously submitted a protest letter to the Ministry of Education, calling for the dissolution of the current council and a fresh selection process.
The professors criticised the rejection of over 80 applications and the selection of only three candidates, including Acting VC Prof. Aisha Maikudi, whose qualifications they questioned.
They also claimed the council’s composition was flawed and lacked necessary academic expertise.
In their letter, the professors urged the Education Minister to intervene, warning that failure to do so could set a dangerous precedent for Nigerian universities.
