Kano Enrols Inmates in Healthcare Scheme for Better Custodial Welfare

The Kano State Government has introduced a new healthcare initiative for inmates in the state’s correctional facilities.

The program, aimed at ensuring free and quality healthcare services, was unveiled by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Healthcare Management Agency, Dr. Rahila Aliyu-Mukhtar, during a visit to the State Controller of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Ado Salisu.

In a statement signed the Public Relations Officer for the Nigeria Correctional Service, Kano Command, CSC Musbahu Kofar-Nasarawa on Monday, the initiative, approved by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, is part of the state’s efforts to enhance inmates’ welfare while in custody.

Dr. Aliyu-Mukhtar stated the importance of this program in contributing to the health and rehabilitation of incarcerated individuals, stating, “The health and medical welfare of inmates are essential for efficient custodial management, as well as for their effective reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration.”

Inmates will now have access to both basic and comprehensive healthcare services, a significant step toward improving their quality of life in custody.

Dr. Aliyu-Mukhtar also encouraged the inmates to pray for Governor Yusuf’s continued efforts in ensuring the success of the state’s welfare programs.

The Controller of Corrections, Mr. Salisu, expressed his gratitude for the state government’s ongoing support.

He highlighted the long-term benefits of the healthcare initiative, noting that it would inspire inmates to become more productive and law-abiding upon their eventual release.
