Human rights advocate Dele Farotimi has been released from the Ekiti State correctional centre after meeting his bail conditions.

Farotimi’s release was disclosed on Tuesday by activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, who tweeted, “I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti state and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues.”

Farotimi was arrested earlier this month for allegedly defaming Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, founder of Afe Babalola University.

Farotimi’s bail conditions, granted by a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti, included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties, and the submission of his passport.

He was also prohibited from granting media interviews once released. However, addressing media personnel after his release,

Farotimi said, “I have never had any cause to lie against anyone in my life… whatever I have said about someone or an institution is true.”

Farotimi’s release comes as a relief to his supporters, who have been advocating for his freedom.

His case has drawn significant public attention, with many criticizing his arrest as an attempt to silence his advocacy work.
