The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has pledged to enhance its relationship with state governors while reaffirming its commitment to good governance.
The association stated its focus on promoting transparency and accountability in grassroots service delivery during its 51st National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Katsina State.
ALGON’s National Publicity Secretary, Hamisu Anani Mohammed, alongside other key members, signed a communique sighted by Africa Health Report on Friday highlighting the resolutions from the meeting.
“We are dedicated to deepening our symbiotic relationship with stakeholders to improve local governance,” the communique stated.
The association also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support in empowering local governments to fulfill constitutional mandates.
It further recognised the judiciary’s role in promoting a viable local government system that aligns with the people’s wishes.
ALGON also lauded the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and state governors for overseeing local government elections in over 30 states, ensuring that democratically elected chairmen are now steering the councils.
“The efforts of the governors in conducting local government elections are commendable,” ALGON noted, urging the remaining states to follow suit to complete the establishment of a people-oriented system in line with President Tinubu’s vision.
The association also expressed appreciation for its president and executive members for engaging with development partners on key issues, such as primary health and disease control. “A healthy citizenry is the strength of every society,” ALGON added.
