The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, in collaboration with the Lagos State Task Force, has launched a one-week operation to tackle the menace of beggars, miscreants, and other social vices across the state.
This move, unfolded on Friday, is in response to the public outcry over the environmental nuisances and security risks posed by these individuals.
Speaking about the situation, commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, explained that the operation was prompted by frequent complaints from residents, which necessitated immediate action from the relevant authorities.
“Since the operation began, we have rescued a significant number of adults and children from the streets of Lagos State,” Ogunlende said.
“All rescued individuals have been taken to our rehabilitation centres for proper care, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.” He added.
The commissioner explained that efforts are underway to reunite the children with their families, while the adults will undergo empowerment programs to acquire skills and become economically self-reliant.
The operation has covered major routes, including Awolowo Way, Ikoyi, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Lekki Road, and other parts of the state.
The Lagos State Government’s commitment to ridding the streets of destitute individuals and miscreants has been described as a significant step towards maintaining a safe and secure environment for its residents.
As the operation continues, it is expected that more individuals will be rescued and rehabilitated, ultimately contributing to a safer and more prosperous Lagos State.
