The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has launched a new initiative aimed at significantly increasing polio vaccination coverage in Katsina State, with a target of reaching over 45% of eligible children by the end of the year.

This ambitious initiative is part of a broader effort to eradicate poliomyelitis in Nigeria and protect future generations from this debilitating disease.

During a press conference held in the state capital, UNICEF officials highlighted the critical need for intensified vaccination efforts in Katsina, which has historically faced challenges in maintaining adequate immunization coverage.

“Polio is a vaccine-preventable disease, yet it continues to pose a serious threat to the health and well-being of children in Katsina and across northern Nigeria,” said Dr. Amina Bello, the UNICEF Health Officer for Katsina State.

“Achieving a vaccination rate of over 45% in the coming months is not just a goal, but a necessity to protect our children and ensure a polio-free future,” she added.

The current polio immunization coverage in Katsina is reported to be below the national target. UNICEF, in collaboration with local health authorities, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations, plans to implement a series of vaccination campaigns and awareness programs to reach underserved communities. The initiative will feature mobile vaccination units and doors.
