NIMASA Commences Monitoring as Oil Spill Hits Shell in Bonny, Rivers State

An oil spill has occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal in Bonny, Rivers State, due to a ruptured pipeline.

The incident prompted SPDC to shut down the affected pipeline and deploy containment booms to prevent further leakage and protect nearby communities.

Africa Health Report (AHR) gathered that despite these efforts, the spill has reached the shoreline, raising concerns about its impact on the ecosystem and local livelihoods.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has activated its emergency operations center to monitor the situation and coordinate a response.

The agency is working with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the spill’s extent and determine necessary remedial measures. NIMASA has reassured the public of its commitment to minimizing the environmental and social consequences of the spill.
