FG Reassures on Quality Healthcare Provision

The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to delivering quality healthcare services across Nigeria.

Speaking at the eighth annual conference of the Association of Nigeria Health Journalists (ANHEJ) in Abuja, Dr. Salma Anas, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, emphasized this commitment

Dr. Anas highlighted the administration’s goals under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, stating that the government is focused on ensuring universal health coverage for all Nigerians, regardless of their location, socio-economic status, or gender.

“President Bola Tinubu is committed to guaranteeing that all Nigerians have access to quality healthcare services. By 2027, we aim to achieve 30% of key health targets, particularly in maternal, newborn, and child health,” she said.

She added that significant strides have been made in governance, healthcare reforms, and expanding health insurance coverage.

These reforms include a national migration policy for health professionals, incentives for local pharmaceutical production, and investments in primary healthcare systems.

“We are on track, with substantial improvements in areas such as governance, human resource development, and health sector reforms,” Dr. Anas noted.

Dr. Anas stressed the importance of addressing health challenges at the subnational level, as most Nigerians reside in rural areas.

She highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen local government autonomy and enhance primary healthcare delivery.

“Functional primary healthcare facilities can address up to 85% of health issues locally. Strengthening referral systems between primary, secondary, and tertiary facilities is also crucial,” she explained.

She also mentioned collaborations with the Association of Local Governments in Nigeria to clarify roles and responsibilities and maximize opportunities for impactful results.

The government has also prioritized upgrading tertiary healthcare institutions. According to Dr. Anas, state-of-the-art oncology and diagnostic centers are being developed in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and the Federal Ministry of Health.
