We Recorded Over 120 Cases of Human Rights Violations in 2024 – NHRC

The Zamfara State chapter of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised alarm over the growing number of human rights violations recorded in 2024.

Speaking at the 2024 World Human Rights Day rally, The NHRC Coordinator for Zamfara, Abdullahi Abubakar stated that over 120 cases have been documented so far this year, including abuse, neglect, and violations of fundamental freedoms.

“So far, we are still counting; we have received more than 120 cases, which is higher than last year. This is a worrying trend,” Abubakar said during the 2024 World Human Rights Day rally held in Gusau.

Abubakar called on the Zamfara State government to implement key laws passed by the previous administration, which he argued would help address issues such as gender-based violence, displacement, and the impact of banditry on human rights. “We want these laws to become operational. Advocacy alone is not enough; we need action to protect our citizens,” he emphasized.

The Emir of Gusau, speaking at the rally’s conclusion at his palace, lauded the NHRC for its efforts and urged community members to promote fairness and equity. “We are all created by the same God. It is our duty to help one another and respect human rights,” the Emir said.
