FCT, Justice Ministers Call for TETFund Amendment to Include Law School

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has urged for an amendment to the law governing the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to recognise the Nigerian Law School as a beneficiary.

This call was made during the inauguration of staff quarters and the handover of operational vehicles to the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, on Monday.

Fagbemi noted the unique position of the Law School, stating that its current exclusion from TETFund creates challenges in classifying it as either a university or a standard institution.

He explained, “One thing about the Law School is, maybe because of the placement, you cannot really place the Nigerian Law School as a university or as an ordinary institution… the Nigerian Law School is not included in TETFund.”

Fagbemi further stressed that amending the TETFund law would ensure the Law School, as a professional training institution, can access funding.

In his address, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, echoed the call for a TETFund amendment, stressing that the Law School’s unique status warrants special consideration. “It is getting too late for the amendment of the TETFund… we will give you all the necessary support that TETFund should be amended for the Law School to benefit from it,” he affirmed.

Wike also assured the management of the Law School that provisions for male and female hostels would be included in the 2025 FCT budget.

He added, “I’m not going to be intimidated by anybody… when you become the Minister of FCT, do it for your own profession that way.”

Both ministers have called for more public-spirited individuals to support the Law School’s infrastructure needs, emphasizing the importance of accommodation for staff to ensure optimal performance.
