The Federal Ministry of Health has issued an urgent alert regarding a newly detected XEC variant of COVID-19, urging immediate action to monitor its spread.
The variant, initially identified in Australia, has already reached 29 countries globally, prompting concerns due to its potential to surpass other strains in transmissibility.
In a letter dated December 5, 2024, and seen by Africa Health Report on Saturday, the ministry outlined the need for heightened vigilance in hospitals nationwide, addressing the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors.
The letter, signed by the Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, Dr. O. N. Anuma, urges hospital staff to activate alert systems and remain on high alert for COVID-like symptoms in patients.
“This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains,” the letter notes, highlighting the significant risk it poses to public health.
The Ministry has called on all relevant stakeholders to collaborate in sharing critical data and implementing enhanced monitoring protocols.
This includes close coordination with the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure an effective response to the emerging threat.
The letter added with reassurances from the Permanent Secretary, emphasising the importance of timely information sharing and swift action.
