NEMA Unveils Nigerian Hazard Risk Analysis 2024

The National Emergency Management (NEMA) has unveiled a Nigerian hazard risk analysis to enhance disaster preparedness and response across the country.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, the Director-General of NEMA, Hajia Zubaida Umar, emphasized the importance of the document, which was developed in collaboration with UNICEF.

She expressed gratitude to all contributors, highlighting the extensive work carried out over the past seven months by experts from government ministries, departments, agencies, UN systems, and NGOs.

“This initiative was driven by the need to understand the evolving risk in our country. With lessons learned from pass disasters, we have analysed 12 hazards, including flooding, epidemics, and conflicts, down to the local Government Area level” she said

According to the Agency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was the Special Guest of Honour, commended NEMA, UNICEF, and key stakeholders for their collaborative efforts in producing the comprehensive risk analysis document.

“This initiative marks a critical step towards ensuring preparedness and an effective response to hazards that threaten our nation,” the Vice President said.

The document serves as a vital blueprint for understanding and addressing risks in Nigeria, representing a new era in proactive disaster management.

The event was attended by prominent stakeholders, including members of the legislature, heads of government agencies, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and key stakeholders in emergency management.
