NAFDAC Warns Manufacturers on Illegal Alcohol Sales in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has firmly warned manufacturers, retailers, and distributors to stop the production and sale of these prohibited products right away.

It highlighted the health risks, especially for children, and encouraged the public to avoid these drinks. Those who don’t comply will encounter strict penalties as outlined by the agency’s rules.

The Agency issued the warning as it ramped up enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and PET bottles smaller than 200ml.

The latest operation in Wuse Market, Abuja, saw the seizure of products valued at over ₦52 million.

The agency disclosed this in a statement released to Africa Health Report (AHR), stating that the ban, which was initially implemented in 2018 following a ministerial directive and agreements with key industry stakeholders, has now reached its full enforcement phase. Despite the phased timeline provided to manufacturers to halt production and distribution, some have continued to breach the regulation.

NAFDAC cautioned that these products present serious health dangers, especially for children. It stressed that manufacturers, retailers, and distributors must adhere to the regulations or risk facing harsh penalties.

The agency’s proactive measures highlight its dedication to protecting public health and maintaining compliance with industry standards.
