The Kogi State government has ordered the closure of Zango Market and banned roadside parking in Osara, following growing security concerns.
This move comes after intelligence reports revealed that criminal elements have been using the market as a hideout, in collaboration with truck drivers who park along the roadside.
The decision was announced in a statement by the state’s Information Commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, on Wednesday. “These measures are aimed at preventing a potential security crisis in the area,” Fanwo said.
The government expressed concerns over the security threat posed to the nearby Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, where several students were kidnapped earlier this year.
Fanwo further explained, “Intelligence reports indicate that criminal elements have been using the market as a hideout, often in collaboration with some truck drivers who park along the roadside.”
He stated that the situation poses a significant security risk not only to the university but also to the entire Osara community.
Governor Usman Ododo has directed that a one-week grace period be given to market operators and truck drivers to comply with the new directives. “After this period, enforcement will be fully implemented,” the statement noted.
The state government also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents. “We will continue to take proactive measures to eradicate criminal activities and leave no room for lawlessness,” said Fanwo.
The statenent added that the state’s Office of the Security Adviser has been tasked with overseeing security operations in the affected areas during the transition.
