Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Reelected as WTO Director-General for Second Term

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reappointed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term, effective September 1, 2025.

This decision was announced in a statement released by the organization on Friday.

Okonjo-Iweala, a renowned Nigerian economist, made history in 2021 by becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO.

“The General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. More details to follow,” a statement on the organization X page read

Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment was unopposed, with the WTO confirming that she was the sole candidate for the position.

The process to appoint the next Director-General began on October 8, with WTO members given until November 8 to submit nominations. Despite this, no additional nominations were received by the deadline.

As Director-General, Okonjo-Iweala has played a vital role in helping WTO members navigate pressing global challenges, including the pandemic, conflict, and heightened geopolitical tensions.

She has pledged to continue delivering results that matter and improve the lives of people around the world.

By promoting trade as a driver of economic growth and resilience, the WTO will provide a collaborative platform for members to address shared global challenges.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala first assumed office as Director-General on 1 March 2021, becoming the first woman and first African to lead the WTO.

Her first term concludes on 31 August 2025.

Her reappointment highlights the strong support for her efforts to enhance the WTO’s relevance and capacity in addressing the evolving challenges of global trade.

Okonjo-Iweala’s distinguished career spans over three decades, with notable positions in Nigeria’s public service, serving as minister under two Nigerian Presidents, the World Bank, and various global organizations.

She has also received numerous accolades, including being named African Person of the Year in 2020.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has welcomed Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment, acknowledging her immense leadership in championing multilateral cooperation during challenging times.

The ICC looks forward to working with her to advance pragmatic solutions through the WTO and promote a more inclusive and equitable multilateral trading system.
