The Lagos State Government has shut down no fewer than 100 health facilities in the last 10 months for quackery.
This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Executive Secretary of the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), Dr Abiola Idowu, during the agency’s sensitisation and enforcement exercise in Badagry.
According to Dr Idowu, the rate of quackery in the state has dropped significantly due to the activities of the agency and the engagement of private stakeholders in monitoring health facilities.
The agency’s presence in Badagry is aimed at improving healthcare service delivery to residents in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES agenda.
Dr Idowu emphasized that the agency’s monitoring and visits to health facilities are not intended to find faults or witch-hunt owners of healthcare centres.
Instead, the goal is to raise standards and improve healthcare delivery in the state.
During the four-day exercise in Badagry, the agency will educate citizens on the importance of patronizing accredited health facilities and advise residents to report health facilities operating without accreditation.
The Baale of Tohon, Adeoye Sottin, commended the governor for providing additional medical equipment to the Badagry General Hospital and urged him to employ more health workers for the short-staffed hospital.
Sottin also implored the agency not to compromise in sealing health facilities operating below set standards, citing the danger they pose to society.
